Veterinary Services

Veterinary Services may vary from facility to facility, however, there are some core services that most veterinary care practitioners always seem to provide. Even some animal adoption and dog shelters now have attached wings or buildings that can provide some of these services at reduced rates.

Lets begin with the pet hospital. A full service animal hospital will offer a wide variety of pet healthcare services, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Anesthesia. Generally required for veterinary surgery and veterinary dentistry procedures ex. dog dental cleaning
  • Ultrasounds. Pregnancy ultrasound, feline ultrasound, dog ultrasound, 4d-ultrasound and state of the art ultrasound machines are pretty much standard
  • Endoscopy. Not all problems can be solved with medicine alone. In many cases these problems may be addressed non-invasively with the use of an endoscope.
  • Laboratory. A complete in-house laboratory facilities provides comprehensive work ups to include serum chemistry, hematology, serology, urinalysis, and parasite testing.
  • Outsourced Labs. In addition to an in-house laboratory, a full service reference laboratory with daily pick-ups is on call, being able to perform virtually any test necessary.
  • Dental Radiology. Veterinary dental care is of the utmost importance to our four-legged friends since they cannot brush and floss everyday as we do, or should be doing. Digital dental x-rays comes first.
  • Microchipping. A veterinary services package is incomplete without this service. What's the point of investing so much in the care and well being of our pets, then stopping short of providing a means of recovery in the event of a lost pet?
  • Pet Vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations is a must if you are a new pet owner. So is heartworm in dogs.

Other Important Services

Spay and neuter services. We don't want feral animals running around upsetting us, do we? Then do the responsible thing. The good news is, the use of laparoscopy in small animal spay/neuter procedures is quickly becoming the preferred surgical option among pet owners. This procedure, once available only for people, is now allowing animals to benefit from the many advantages of these techniques such as a safer and less painful surgical experience.

No veterinary services package is complete without preventative medicine. Let's face it, we know what to eat and what not to eat and yet some of us just cannot grasp the concept. How are we expected to know what's good for out pets? Just a quick jaunt around your local PetSmart 'treats" aisle will make this clear. The fact is, a large portion of dog dental problems may well arise from what we routinely select in this aisle.

As with your own health, the key to maintaining your pets' health is in preventative medicine. Most veterinarians agree that your pet needs a all around physical examination at least once per year. Events happen quickly in a twelve month period, so maybe even every six months may be more suitable.

Granted, this article may exclude somethings that you may consider more important than some we listed. The article is just a guide. It was written to stimulate the brain into seriously considering which veterinary services may or may not be appropriate for your pet. The point is, take your pet to the vet.
